With Christmas approaching, many festive events, venues and markets have started to open, with the biggest being the Winter Wonderland in Glasgow.
It’s held every year and known for transforming that part of the city centre into a festive extravaganza, including holding many activities such as Christmas markets, food stalls, rides, ice skating, and various entertainment options.
However, this year things are different as George Square is still closed for its restoration operations
That meant organisers had to move their festivities at St Enoch Square and have started with bringing something new to the event.
The St Enoch Centre operation started sooner than expected, with it beginning on the 6th of November, run until December 24, 2025.
With this early arrival, they have shown something that is a city first – by hosting the world’s first solar-powered Ferris wheel, designed in Germany by a family-owned business led by Harvey Wegner.
The Big Wheel is the first of its kind with it having a storage system that can hold enough power for up to ten hours. It is also accessible to wheelchair users.
Additional attractions at St Enoch Square include a licensed Festive Bar, showcased for the first time in Scotland, and will include live music throughout the event, Visitors can also enjoy festive shopping with gifts, food and drinks on sale.
The Lord Provost of Glasgow Jacqueline McLaren said: “Although the nights have started to grow darker winter always shines bright in Glasgow. With ongoing works at George Square, we have an opportunity to reimagine the city’s festive lights with a brand-new trail across the city centre and there are lots of other new and exciting things to see and do.”
