Tis’ the season to be jolly, at the GFT.

If the Christmas film afternoon at Langside campus on Friday 12th December takes your fancy (read What’s happening at the college this December? – The Clyde Insider for further info), you might be interested in what the Glasgow Film Theatre (GFT) is doing this month.

They’ve released their Christmas schedule and what better way to celebrate the holiday season than heading on down to Glasgow’s home of cinema and catch a festive flick.

From the 12th of December moviegoers can see some of their favourite seasonal films and soak up the Christmas spirit. From modern staples like Elf & The Holdovers to Frank Capra’s classic It’s a Wonderful Life which has become a mainstay at the Glasgow institution, there’s something for all tastes and as the GFT put’s it, “our Christmas programme is packed with something for everyone, even the biggest Scrooges among us”.

In It’s a Wonderful Life main character George Bailey famously reminds the townsfolk that the ‘old building and loan’ only works when people come together as a community something which seems particularly fitting even today but also applies to our beloved film theatre.

The Muppets Christmas Carol, Home Alone and White Christmas complete the traditional festive line-up.

There’s also those alternative Xmas movies on show such as Gremlins, Die Hard (yes, it is a Christmas film!), In Bruges and Anna and the Apocalypse.

The GFT brings us together through cinema and lets us hear each other’s stories, whether you’re taking in a Christmas flick or catching a cult film throughout the year, we keep cinema alive by coming back time and time again. And some of the screenings are catered for the hard of hearing.

If you’ve ever attended the GFT before then you know that it’s more than just a cinema, it’s an iconic venue that changes with the seasons.

Whether they’re showing award winning independent films during the Glasgow Film Festival, cult classics like ‘Evil Dead’ and ‘Mad Max 2 or pulling on our heartstrings with films like ‘Call me by Your Name’ and ‘I Swear’ they’re with us all year round to keep us entertained.

So, start a new Christmas tradition this year or continue an old one and head on down to the Glasgow Film Theatre to support the wonderful theatre that’s been keeping the film reels rolling since 1939. Afterall, there’s nowhere we’d rather be, than watching a film at the GFT.
