Clydebank’s victory saves Cambuslang from relegation

By Andy Sharp

Clydebank’s promotion to the Scottish Lowland League spared Cambuslang Rangers’ blushes after a season to forget for the Lanarkshire junior outfit.

Gers had to wait two weeks to find out if they would still be able to play in the West of Scotland Second Division with all eyes on the game at Townhead arena on Sunday when Clydebank, the champions of the West of Scotland Premier League faced the winners of the East of Scotland Premier League, Musselburgh in a promotion play-off.

Camby had finished fourth from bottom in their league, following a 4-2 defeat to Kilmarnock’s Bonnyton Thistle in the last game of the season.

Usually, that position would guarantee safety, but if Clydebank lost the play-off, then four teams would have been relegated.

In turn, the Bankies won their two-legged tie 3-1 on aggregate meaning, saving the Gers from relegation.

Although it was a disappointing campaign, striker Carlos Lyon finished as the league’s second top scorer.

But with only eight wins, five draws and 17 defeats, it’s been a bruising couple of years for the team who were relegated from the First Division.

Speaking to the Daily Record, manager Paul McColl slammed his side following the defeat last Saturday: “It has been a poor season, and everybody needs to take the blame, but Saturday wasn’t good enough and I’m really disappointed with it.”

So as Camby gear up for a second season in the West of Scotland second division it seems unclear as to how the squad will gear up to try avoiding another situation of waiting for another team to get them out of jail, Clydebank’s win now sees them become the first ever team to win the East Vs West playoff game after Auchinleck talbot and Darvel both failed in their bid over the past two years
