Doechii: Swamp princess to Grammy winner

Denial is a river, but there is no denying the rise of this Floridian sensation after a stellar night at the Grammys.

Doechii was born and raised in Tampa by her parents, one of whom was a rapper, Snatcha Da Boss. It was no surprise that his daughter would follow in his rapping footsteps.

Although, rap was not always the plan for Doechii. Originally, she intended to do professional choral work but was swayed by a friend into producing and releasing her own music.

After being fired in 2020, the “swamp princess” worked hard to rise to the top, going viral with songs like “Yucky Blucky Fruitcake” and “What It Is.”

Her highest momentum came from her 2024 mixtape “Alligator Bites Never Heal.” Many songs surfaced on TikTok, accelerating her rise.

Continuing to bring the heat from 2024, Doechii started 2025 by attending and performing at the 67th Annual Grammy Awards.

Out of three nominations, she took home her first Grammy: Best Rap Album for “Alligator Bites Never Heal.” She became the third woman in Grammys history to win this award, after Lauryn Hill and Cardi B.

Her acceptance speech moved many viewers, as she spoke about the importance of the award, her sobriety, the talent in her hometown, and motivating other black women.

During the ceremony, Doechii performed a powerful rendition of “CATFISH” and “DENIAL IS A RIVER,” with intricate choreography and jaw-dropping moments, like an outfit reveal and being held in the air during splits.

Doechii’s rise from swamp princess of Tampa to Grammy-winning legend is justified, as shown by her performances. It’s likely this first Grammy won’t be her last.
