The student association’s president has praised the college for its huge efforts in supporting students who were observing Ramadan recently.
The period of fasting took place between February and March and thanks to the college, a larger prayer facility was found which allowed a record number of people to pray together.
And thanks to the work by the association’s president, Madeeha Kanwal, she was able to source prayer mats, fruits and juice via generous donations.
Madeeha said: “It was very well received, with at least 50 students using the space on a daily basis. Many learners expressed genuine gratitude towards the college for supporting them in this way. The facility of free fruits and juices was opened to all students irrespective of if they are observing fast or any faith.”
Ramadan is the holiest month of the year in the Islamic calendar. It marks the period of when the Qur’an was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad. Those who follow the faith take part in fasting between dawn and sunset allowing them to reflect on those who are suffering in life.
The second event was an Eid celebration organised by ESOL Gateway students along with the Student Association. Eid is a celebration event to mark the end of Ramadan. Muslims come together with friends and family.
At the college, a ‘one dish party’ was held where students brought a variety of homemade foods, creating a warm and inclusive atmosphere with some music and chat. Lecturer Clare Carroll also presented students with Happy Eid note cards with a charm bracelet.
Madeeha added: “The event was filled with lovely dishes, cultural exchange, and a strong sense of community, with students enjoying the opportunity to share food and celebrate together.”
